Gmail users are warned about a clever scam

An innocent-looking email that could have been sent to millions of accounts targets Internet users to scam them.

Internet users are urged to immediately delete and report an email that appears to be from Google offering a gift for helping the company achieve record number of searches on its search engine.

A version of the email, posted online, praises the recipient for performing the “18.25 billionth search”. It claims that Google will reward every 10 millionth search and provides a set of instructions to follow, including submitting personal data, to claim a prize.

Google has warned that any emails or advertisements offering prizes are fraudulent. The company’s help page clarifies that it does not run lotteries, sweepstakes, or similar programs. She recommends reporting any email suggesting otherwise as spam.

A number of similar scams have been sent to Gmail and other accounts in the past, including emails requesting payment for using services such as Google Maps.

The company says there are several obvious signs that could help people determine if an email is a scam. “Scams are often designed to create a sense of urgency. Take time to ask questions and think things through,” a Google representative said.

He added: “No reputable person or company will ever ask you for a payment or give out your personal information on the spot.”
