Gmail mobile app can now translate foreign languages

Google announced that it is bringing the translation capability to Gmail’s mobile app. This feature is available on mobile devices including iOS and Android.

Its translation capability offers support for more than 100 languages worldwide. This means that no matter where you live, Gmail can translate incoming emails to your native language.

Language preferences in Gmail settings will be used

The Gmail app will not automatically understand your native language. It will use the language preference set in the Gmail account settings to determine which language the email will be translated into. If you don’t expect emails other than your native language, you can turn off Gmail’s translation for a specific language in the translation settings menu.

The Gmail app on your phone will automatically detect if the emails you receive contain a language other than your preferred language and display a banner that you have to tap to translate. But if Gmail can’t detect a foreign language or you’ve turned this feature off, you can always translate emails manually via the three-dot menu. Additionally, apart from Gmail, popular email application like Microsoft Outlook can also easily translate emails on your phone.

The translation will appear at the top

The translation banner will appear at the top of the email. You can close the banner and continue reading the contents of the email. It is important to note that closing the banner will not automatically turn off translation for a particular language. The banner will reappear if you open another email with a language that does not match the language preference you set in Gmail. This will give you extra convenience.

Release dates for Android and iOS users

The new translation feature for Android and iOS users will be available according to the release dates. Android users can start enjoying the feature right away, as Google states. However, it should be noted that the distribution will take place gradually.

iOS users will be able to start using this feature on August 21, 2023. Google will offer this translation feature to both Google Workspace customers and individual Google Account users. In this way, Android and iOS users will be able to understand emails quickly and easily, even if they receive them in different languages.
