Since the start of the industrial era, our planet has been heating up. Scientists keep repeating it. Plus 1.2 ° C already, on average. Last year, the month of November was particularly hot around the world. But what about this year? And how does this translate for France? We felt it well, the freshness dominated.

[EN VIDÉO] Global warming: our planet in uncharted territory In the preliminary version – which only covers the first nine months of 2021 – of its annual State of the Global Climate report, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) confirms the trend of global warming. For the first time, the bar of an increase of 1 ° C compared to pre-industrial averages has been crossed over the period of the last twenty years. But above all, the report highlights the many extreme weather events that occurred in 2021 and their consequences for the planet and for humanity. © World Meteorological Organization
In November 2021, the mean temperature over mainland France was 7.9 ° C. Raw data which, in itself, remains difficult to assess. Corn Weather report France specifies that this average is below the normal ones, those calculated over a period of 30 years, for the moment still between 1981 and 2010. The average temperature in France in this month of November shows a anomaly of -0.7 ° C.
Only the Mediterranean rim and Corsica as well as the Channel coasts and the northern borders have experienced seasonal temperatures. The rest of the country had a very cool November. With two cold peaks, one at the beginning of the month, the other at the end of the month. All in a more than variable sunshine: 120 hours in Nantes (Loire-Atlantique) against only 44 hours in Chambéry (Savoie) – this is also a record of low sunshine.
Snow at the end of the month
In this month of November 2021, our country experienced a significant rainfall deficit. On average, above 30%. Locally, it was even able to reach 70% on the southern side of Brittany, from Vendée to Poitou.
Corsica, on the other hand, has been heavily watered. Monthly totals were able to reach one and a half to three times normal. In particular following the passage of the storm Blas, around November 10th.
Also note, a new Mediterranean episode which went from Languedoc-Roussillon to the Cévennes and the Var coast between 23 and 25 November.
And at the end of the month, thanks to one of the cold peaks mentioned above, all the massifs experienced snowfall particularly abundant for the season. A few snowflakes even fell in the plains over a large northeastern quarter of the country.
Detour by the Overseas
France is also overseas departments and regions. Some in thenorthern hemisphere – Martinique, Guadeloupe – and others in the southern hemisphere – Reunion, Guyana and Mayotte – in which we are now approaching summer.
At the time of posting, information for November 2021 is not available for any of these regions. However, those for October 2021 are now available for Guadeloupe and Martinique. They are still missing for Guyana – last update in August 2021 – and for Mayotte – last update in March 2021.
On the Guadeloupe side, last October showed an average temperature of 27.1 ° C. This is 0.6 ° C higher than normal. The result, above all, of warmer minimum temperatures. And, on the whole, the drying trend continues with in particular a number of days with precipitation significant decreases.
In Martinique, temperatures were still higher than normal overall in October 2021. With an anomaly of up to +1.4 ° C. At the same time, the rainfall was in deficit. Between minus 30 and minus 50% over a large part of the island.
As a reminder, the data for Reunion Island had already been released at the time of our October update. The island had experienced a temperature anomaly of + 0.8 ° C with above all, once again, minimum temperatures of 1.3 ° C above normal. And Reunion had experienced a rainfall surplus of 50% on average.
