Leksand extended the winning streak beat AIK

Glenn Hysén is one of Swedish football’s great players.
Now the legend tells his funniest anecdote – about superstar and former teammate Roberto Baggio.
– He started crying and I had to comfort him for a quarter of an hour, says Hysén to Fotbolltransfers.

He is one of our very greatest Swedish footballers and a real funny guy at the tips of his fingers, the good one Glenn Hysen. Few players can match his incredible track record from a successful career at the top of the world.

Hysén’s career

The hard-nosed centre-back won most of what could be won at club team level and broke through at IFK Göteborg during the club’s heyday. As one of several Glenns in the team, he was involved in winning three SM golds and above all the feat of winning the Uefa Cup in 1982.

Pointing out Baggio

Even in the Swedish national team, Glenn Hysén was a tone-setting player and made 67 international appearances, some with the captain’s armband around his arm. Twice during his career he received the Golden Ball as Sweden’s best player and the Gothenburger also made unforgettable history as the first to be awarded a sixth grade after a class effort against England at Wembley in the World Cup qualifiers in 1988.

Over the years, Hysén played with a whole bunch of world stars and there is one name that stands out a little extra when he remembers back. Namely the Italian big star Roberto Baggiowhich has a given place in Glenn’s very own dream world.
– When I came to Fiorentina, he was 18-19 years old, had just come up. But damn what a great player. What I remember about him… On the trips away he was studying Buddhism, so I thought: “What the hell is he doing?”. I had no idea what it was, but he felt good about it. During a trip, I would read a bit about it, but I didn’t understand a damn thing, says the Swedish icon for the site Fotbolltransfers.
– But I have another funny story with Baggio.

Glenn Hysén remembers one moment in particular during his time with the Italian in Florence.
– One morning we came out to the training facility, there was a little dew on the ground, some worms crawling up. Then there was a bunch of seagulls, maybe 50-60 of them. They were 70-80 meters from us. Baggio said: “Look here now”. Then he pulled a half-volley in the middle of the pile, but we knew that everyone would disappear before the ball landed, says Glenn in the interview.
– But a seagull was left and got the ball in the middle of the head and stopped. When we arrived, a seagull was lying dead with its tongue sticking out and Baggio started to cry. The guy was completely destroyed. I had to comfort him for a quarter of an hour and told him: “It’s not your fault, we all thought they would fly away.”
