With Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, the sequel to Knives Out has become a big Netflix hit. Director Rian Johnson (Star Wars 8: The Last Jedi) still has nibbles on his own film. The official title bothers him enormously.
Glass Onion creator rails against politics at Netflix: “How can we keep milking it?”
The Atlantic he said:
I’ve been working hard on it, on my own[e] [Filme] close. I am pissed that we have “A Knives Out Mystery” in the title. [Der Film] should just be called Glass Onion.
From a creative standpoint, it’s understandable not to want to append a fresh film to an old predecessor. Johnson admits, however, that he too has nothing to oppose a current franchise compulsion.
[In der Filmindustrie] pulls the gravity of a thousand suns toward serialization. […] There’s this toxic idea […], which seeps into the storytelling foundation. Everyone thinks [bei einer Geschichte] only: “How can we keep milking it?”
Johnson’s critique of profit-driven and mindless serialization will resonate with many fans. In particular, his old field of activity Star Wars was more often in community circles in the reputation of innovative stories exchange for weak storytelling and fan service.
