Gigantic sci fi blockbuster returns after 4 years of waiting

The image of the earth being moved through space by humans was the spectacular showpiece of The Wandering Earth. In 2019, the Chinese science fiction film emptied the box office in its home country, while in this country it ended up exclusively on Netflix. Is the earth wandering again in The Wandering Earth 2?

In the world of The Wandering Earth, the planet was threatened by the sun’s expansion and was then “pulled” out of the line of fire. Most of the action in Part 1 takes place in the year 2075, when Earth is on a collision course with Jupiter.

The sequel takes a few steps back and follows the Prelude to The Wandering Earth. How did mankind decide to pull the earth through space and how exactly was the blue planet moved in 2058? Anyone who has asked themselves these and other questions after Part 1 should make a note of The Wandering Earth 2, which boasts a running time of almost three hours and state-of-the-art effects.

The cast this time includes superstar Andy Lau (Infernal Affairs) and The Wandering Earth veteran Wu Jing (Wolf Warrior). With Frant Gwo, the director of the original returns.

Is The Wandering Earth 2 coming to Netflix?

In China, The Wandering Earth opened last weekend, just in time for the lucrative Chinese New Year, which traditionally represents the blockbuster season in the People’s Republic. The sci-fi film pushed Avatar 2: The Way of Water from number 1 on the domestic box office and has grossed around $270 million so far (via EntGroup ).

Whether the blockbuster is over again Netflix will find its way to Germany is unfortunately not yet certain.

In his review, East Asian cinema expert Simon Abrams describes the film as “brittle and old-fashioned space opera” with “beautiful and expensive looking computer effects”which, compared to its predecessor, puts more emphasis on the characters and emotions.
