Petter Northug’s shock result is the big talk of the entire skiing world right now.
Then Norwegian experts came up with a giant saw – by Sweden.
– He had won the SM, says Torgeir Björn.
It’s no secret that Petter Northug has been training hard for the past year. Since the icon ended his skiing career, he has instead focused on long-distance running, and last year he took part in the Vasaloppet for the first time. However, it was not a success, but Northug promised to come back stronger this year, and now he seems to have found his form, to say the least.
Northug’s shock run
Northug, who is now 38 years old, has now made a comeback in traditional cross-country skiing, returning after six years. And this weekend it was a complete success, with a race that the entire skiing world is talking about right now. Northug competed on Sunday in the 20 kilometer classic in the Norwegian Cup, and came sensationally second, only beaten by David Thorvik.
Northug beat several active top riders, including Henrik Dönnestad who has a podium place in the World Cup this season. And after the success, more and more votes are being raised that Northug deserves a place in Norway’s WC team next year, to get the chance in the five mile. There is also a five-mile in Holmenkollen, Norway, next month, a race that Northug can definitely be selected for. Norway’s national team coach has already opened up about Northug after the weekend’s success, but it has also been highlighted how Northug stands against Swedish skaters.
The mockery of Sweden
Torgeir Björn, distance expert at NRK, believes that Northug would be the best in Sweden at the distance if given the chance.
– It’s shockingly good, says Björn, before continuing:
– But this race he had become Swedish champion. Only William Poromaa, Calle Halfvarsson and Jens Burman have the capacity to oppose what Northug shows here.
Petter Northug had some famous taunts against Swedes during his time as an active skier. And this time too, he took the opportunity to send a greeting to all the Swedish stars.
– Last year I beat Björn Sandström right after he won the SM. The question is not whether I had won, but only about how much I had won by, he tells TV2.
