Getting to the bottom of the impact of wildlife – after the Nord Stream

After the attack on the Nord Stream gas pipeline, researchers are now wondering how the animal life below the surface has been affected in the area.

At the State Veterinary Institute in Uppsala, detailed sampling is currently underway where it is later hoped to be able to determine if and how the fish were affected by the methane gas that leaked out in connection with the explosion that took place earlier last autumn. Part of the process consists of analyzing blood and organs.

In each plastic jar there are organs from a single fish and each part is carefully examined to discover if the fish has been affected in any way. In normal cases, you know exactly what you are looking for and even if samples are taken regularly at SVA, it is far from routine samples that are taken here today.

– Among other things, you could find gas bubbles in the blood vessels, in the gills, which in practice is like a blood clot of gas, says Hampus Hällbom, assistant state veterinarian SVA.
