After Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, a friendship that lasted for years began between the actor and the author. It was also Depp himself who found the manuscript for Rum Diary and urged Thompson to publish it and have it made into a film with him in the lead role (via Collider).
How deep the friendship between the two was is also shown by the fact that Depp paid the incredible costs of $3 million for Thompson’s funeral took over (via The Guardian ). The eccentric writer wanted to be buried as legendary as he had lived and had his ashes shot into space.
