Germany were 1-0 down and a few minutes had been played in the second half when Austria’s Philipp Mwene and German winger Leroy Sané got into an altercation after a duel.
Sané lost it completely and punched the Austrian in the face. He was furious and was sent off at the same time Mwene received a yellow card.
It was Sané’s first red card in the 402nd professional match of his career.
– Leroy’s red card sums it all up. Frustration and disappointment. We made it far too easy for Austria. It was simply not good enough, says team captain Ilkay Gündogan in a TV interview with ZDF after the match.
The match ended 2-0 to Austria.
