Germany’s Scholz: Bitter election results | News in brief

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz commented to Reuters on the results of Sunday’s state elections.

Chancellor of Germany, Social Democrats Olaf Scholz considers Sunday’s election results in the states of Thuringia and Saxony “bitter”.

The far-right party AfD became the largest party in Thuringia and the second largest in Saxony. Traditional left-wing parties like SDP lost votes in both states.

– Sunday’s election results are bitter, including for us. In any case, SDP thought the same, Scholz commented to the news agency Reuters.

According to Scholz, the Social Democrats ran a good campaign and the worst fears of a collapse in popularity did not come true.

– All democratic parties must now form stable governments without right-wing extremists.

Scholz said he was “concerned” about the rise in popularity of the AfD.

– AfD is harming Germany. It weakens the economy, divides society and ruins the reputation of our country, Scholz said.
