German Finance Minister by Christian Lindner according to the country’s European partners must make a move in providing support to Ukraine.
In Lindner’s opinion, the situation cannot be such that Germany increases its own expenses and pays Ukraine on behalf of others, and at the same time Germany’s European partners do not do enough.
Speaking at the party conference in Berlin on Saturday, Lindner reminded that Germany’s share is currently already half of all the support that Ukraine receives from Europe.
– We are not going to give up our commitments, he assured.
Especially at the beginning of the war of aggression against Russia, Germany was criticized for hesitating and delaying military aid to Ukraine. Currently, Germany supports Ukraine more than any other European country. Aid from different countries to Ukraine will follow of the Kiel Institute according to Germany had given more than 17.1 billion euros in military aid to Ukraine between January 2022 and October 2023.
Trump’s possible rise to power is worrying
Also the Chancellor of Germany Olaf Scholz stressed last week that Europe must invest more in Ukraine. Increasing arms aid to Ukraine is critically important, especially because in the United States, supporting Ukraine has drifted into a proxy for internal political disputes.
So does the president of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyi said in an interview with German broadcaster ARD on Sunday that a US inaction or reduced support would be a bad signal.
Zelenskyi appealed to Germany to use its economic weight to strengthen the support of other EU countries for Ukraine.
Former President of the United States and likely Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump has caused nervousness in his speeches about the continuation of the country’s support for Ukraine. Many fear that if Trump is elected president in November, he might withdraw US military support from Ukraine, thinking that the US will leave Ukraine to the Europeans.
