The German government must take immediate steps to reduce emissions, according to a ruling by the Court of Appeal in Berlin-Brandenburg. This is reported by the Süddeutsche Zeitung.
The judgment applies to climate-damaging emissions from the traffic and construction sectors. Complainants in the case are two environmental protection organizations that accuse the government coalition in Berlin of shortcomings in climate policy.
Chancellor Olaf Scholz and his motley alliance of social democrats, liberals and greens are hard pressed by a decision in the Constitutional Court two weeks ago, which ruled the attempts to use a corona fund worth 60 billion euros for various climate projects as unconstitutional.
Influential news magazine Der Spiegel describes that verdict as “devastating” and possibly “the beginning of the end” for Scholz as chancellor.
