According to the German defense minister, the new aid package shows how serious the country is about helping Ukraine.
Germany is preparing a massive 2.7 billion euro support package for Ukraine, the German Ministry of Defense announced on Saturday. It is the largest aid package that Germany has granted to Ukraine so far.
Germany was criticized especially at the beginning of the war for hesitating and delaying sending military aid to Ukraine. German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius however, the new support package shows how serious the country is about helping Ukraine.
– We all hope for a quick end to the terrible war started by Russia against the people of Ukraine, but unfortunately that is not in sight. For this reason, Germany will give all the help it can give, as long as it is necessary, Pistorius states.
The new support package is said to include 30 Leopard tanks, four Iris-T anti-aircraft systems, 20 Marder assault tanks, 200 reconnaissance aircraft, 100 armored vehicles and a large amount of ammunition.
The German media revealed at the beginning of May that the president of Ukraine to Volodymyr Zelensky is planning to visit Germany on the 13th and 14th May the country’s chancellor By Olaf Scholz from the invitation. This would be Zelensky’s first visit to Germany during the war.
Instead of Germany, the president of Ukraine has arrived in Rome on Saturday, he is supposed to meet the prime minister of Italy Giorgia Melonithe president Sergio Mattarella and the Pope Francis.
