While the price of ice cream has increased by 20.4% in France since January 2022, according to calculations by the firm NielseniQ, a liter of ice cream in Germany costs only 1.5 euros on average, reveals the office of European Union statistics Eurostat. By comparison, when we note the prices charged in 2022, France produces the second most economical range of ice cream, at only 1.90 euros per liter on average, compared to 2.30 euros in Italy, the third European country where the cone is the most affordable. Conversely, a cool break can reach heights like in Austria where the tub of ice cream requires a financial effort, ie 7 euros per litre! In Denmark too, a scoop of ice cream is not cheap, ie 4.40 euros per litre, while in Finland the budget is around 2.80 euros per litre.
Our neighbors across the Rhine actually manage to serve economical ice creams because of their strike force on this subject. They are the largest producers of ice cream in the Union, in a context where the production of this summer essential increased by 5% to reach 3.2 billion litres. Last year, they made 620 million liters, compared to 591 million liters in France and 571 liters in Italy.
Nevertheless, if the Germans are ice cream buffs, their frosty flavors are mostly swallowed up by the population and other Europeans. Because it is France that refreshes other countries outside the European Union with its ice cream. French exports outside the common area amounted to 53 million kg, which represents 21% of exports outside the European Union. The French had a record year in 2022 by spending 1.4 billion euros to buy ice cream.
