For just nine euros a month, anyone has been able to travel anywhere in Germany during the summer.

Germany has seen the subsidy as a test to see how it can reach the climate goals by reducing car traffic, but also reducing dependence on oil and gas from Russia.

The experiment has been a success. In June, car traffic decreased in 24 out of 26 cities. Traveling by train increased by 40 percent. The downside has been fully booked trains and a lack of space. Discussions are now underway as to whether the subsidy should remain.
