German tourist detained for murder of acquaintance in the archipelago

A man died after being found in the water on Thursday afternoon in Gothenburg’s archipelago.
The police suspect murder and the man who has been detained since Thursday has now been remanded in custody.
– The suspect believes that they have been sailing together at a boat race in Norway, says District Attorney Maria Thorell.

It was on Thursday morning that the Coast Guard, the Maritime Rescue Society and the Maritime Administration received an alert that several people had fallen overboard. A man was taken to Sahlgrenska hospital by ambulance helicopter, but later died of his injuries.

Both men in their 60s and 70s are German citizens, according to the prosecutor Maria Thorell.

– The suspect believes that they have been sailing together at a boat race in Norway and were on their way home to Germany, on the way home they started arguing, says District Attorney Maria Thorell.

Winched out of the sea

The location of the incident must have been at sea in Kattegatt in Öckerö municipality, about 25 kilometers outside the outermost islands in the Gothenburg archipelago.

In a major rescue effort, the man was winched out of the sea. He was taken to hospital by ambulance helicopter but his life could not be saved.

The arrested person is now in custody

It later emerged that the incident was being investigated as a murder. During Sunday, Chamber Prosecutor Maria Thorell announced that the arrested man is being detained.

The man denies any wrongdoing.

The deceased man’s next of kin have been notified.
