It doesn’t always have to be California, the moon or another planet. The sci-fi thriller Die Wolke moves the future mind games to Lower Franconia. What happened if in the German provinces a super meltdown of Chernobyl proportions is happening? The result is part disaster film, part coming-of-age drama, and it’s on TV today.
On TV: In the sci-fi thriller The Cloud, a nuclear accident contaminates Germany
Hannah (Paula Kalenberg) leads the chaotic life of a normal teenager. She falls in love with Elmar (Franz Dinda) for the first time, worries about math exams and bickers with her mother. But then a reactor accident happened in the nearby nuclear power plant. Hannah and Elmar are separated, each fighting for their own survival. And the murderous catastrophe claims new victims every minute.
Based on a novel by Gudrun Pausewang, the film by Gregor Schnitzler (What to do if it’s burning?) recreates the mind game of a nuclear accident in Germany, while remaining close to its main character. Especially in its second half he gains a lot of emotional tension as a result. However, the film doesn’t quite come close to genre highlights like Chernobyl.
