It sounds like the concept for an episode of the dystopian sci-fi series Black Mirror, but it is German mini-series projectwhich is also based on Netflix. In Cassandra by screenwriter and director Benjamin Gutsche (Arthur’s Law), a family is terrorized by their retro smart home, whose AI already speaks in an unnecessarily ominous manner in the announcement teaser:
Cassandra – S01 Announcement (German) HD
The time travel drama Dark has so far demonstrated most impressively that German sci-fi can also work internationally on Netflix.
Cassandra: German sci-fi dystopia from Netflix
In the six-part miniseries, Samira (Mina Tander) and her family move into a house that has been empty for 50 years. When they move in, the electronic household helper Cassandra (Lavina Wilson), which was developed in the 1970s and has a correspondingly outdated worldview, is also activated. She can be helpful, but she also has very clear ideas about how things should work and won’t tolerate any missteps.
Of course, it doesn’t take long for the matter to turn into a dystopian AI nightmare. People who have dealt with artificial intelligences like HAL9000 from 2001: A Space Odyssey or GLaDOS from the Portal video games can tell you a thing or two about it.
Michael Klemm, Franz Hartwig, Mary Tölle, Joshua Kantara, Elias Grünthal and Filip Schnack also have roles in the production by Rat Pack Filmproduktion.
Cassandra goes on February 6, 2025 launched internationally on Netflix.
