It is probably the biggest Netflix innovation in a long time: the streaming service has been planning for a long time Restrict password sharing. Since almost every person who uses Netflix also shares their account, the company expects a blatant increase in profits. If you want to pass on your account, you have to pay more. The regulation was already active in countries such as Canada and New Zealand. Now it’s Germany’s turn.
Here you can find out all the prices, what is actually meant by password parts and how you can set up the additional account you now need.
Netflix password sharing costs: These are the new prices
The new regulation: You must in future additional accounts create if you share your Netflix passwords with anyone who doesn’t live in your household. More on this below in the section “Who is affected by the regulation?”.
The prices in Germany: According to the Netflix service page, an additional account is available in Germany 4.99 euros costs. This leads to maximum additional costs of almost 10 euros.
What do I have to do now? It is still not certain when exactly the regulation will actually come into force, i.e. when you will have to fear concrete consequences. The regulation may apply in Germany from July 1, 2023, when the third quarter of the year begins.
How does the additional account work with Netflix?
Netflix says: “An additional member has their own account and password. However, membership is paid for by the person who invited the additional member to share. Your subscription determines how many additional member slots you can add.”
What that means for you in concrete terms: You have to coordinate with the person who has been transferring the monthly amounts to Netflix for you so far. If you do not have administrative rights, you cannot take any action beyond contacting them. If you are the administrator of a shared account, you must set up additional accounts for your “parasites”.
How many additional accounts can I set up with Netflix?
Who is affected by the regulation?
You’re affected if you’re on Netflix’s Premium or Standard plan and don’t live in the same household as the person who pays Netflix membership fees each month.
Example: You share the family subscription with your family living in city A. But you moved out a month ago and are now living in City B. So far, you have been able to use the old subscription without any problems, although Netflix does not officially allow this, at least. Now Netflix is officially taking action against shared accounts across households.
What happens if I don’t create an additional account?
It is not yet known when the regulation will come into force. But it’s only a matter of time. If Netflix then detects activity in your account that indicates password sharing, you must expect a ban. However, only after a certain period of time, as Variety reports.
