Tibia is one of the oldest MMORPGs ever. The developers have now announced a new feature that is actually part of the basic equipment for most games: sound.
What is this MMORPG? Tibia is an online role-playing game by Studio CipSoft from Regensburg. It celebrated its release in 1997, and the beginning of 2022 marks its 25th anniversary.
To this day, the game still has a loyal player base – albeit mainly abroad. There are tons of Tibia fans in Brazil, Venezuela, Poland, Sweden and Mexico, among others. In the MeinMMO interview, Stephan Vogler, one of the studio’s founders, even described Brazil as by far the most important market for the game.
Anyway, 25 years after its release, fans of the game can expect a remarkable change in the game – no matter where they come from. Because shortly there will be sound in Tibia for the first time.
Tibia speaks of “quite a step that is worthwhile”
What is this update? The sound update is scheduled to be available starting Tuesday, September 27, 2022.
In a statement on the Tibia homepage, the community management team explains what players can expect. The whole game should be enriched by sound. Players should discover a “new and fresh side of a world you know inside and out.”
The team says the new soundscapes are “quite a step, but a step well worth it.” Players should see the new sounds as an adventure of their own to uncover.
At the same time, the system should also be individually adaptable: “For us it was important to give you the choice, to give you different options to design your own sound experience, to decide which sounds you want to hear and which you might want to mute “, the announcement reads (via tibia.com).
Both music and sound effects can be silenced again if you are not a fan of them.
Exactly which effects and sounds will be added will be announced shortly before release. However, it is already clear that it will not be about voice lines and spoken dialogues – the team already explained this in the Tibia forum (via tibia.com). There is also no voice chat.
However, the Tibia team announced a premiere for September 26th on YouTube: There you should be able to hear a new Tibia anthem for the first time, which should embody 25 years of game history.
By the way: You can find out more about the background of Tibia and why MMORPGs used to be more exciting in the MeinMMO podcast:
What are players saying? Players are already discussing the announcement on the Tibia forums, and most of all they seem excited to see what effect the new element will have on the gaming experience.
They’re excited about new music, boss sounds, or the “chomp” sound when you eat something. Sometimes it’s about little things: “I can’t wait to hear the noises while eating, especially the ‘smacking’ of the cheese,” writes user “Kleyder Assesin”.
Incidentally, Tibia is not the only older MMORPG that still has an active fan base:
However, some also emphasize that they will probably switch off the feature again after hearing it for the first time: “I can’t believe that it’s actually already there and can’t wait to try it out,” writes user “Lord Andarer Mensch” (via Tibia Forum): “Although I’m one of those who think I’ll turn it off at some point, I think it will be great for new and casual players to fall in love with the game”.
What do you think of the new feature? Do you have any memories or experiences with Tibia? Do you think the sound will improve the game? Tell us in the comments.
