Germany has for the first time fired sharply at the EU’s effort to protect shipping in the Red Sea, German media reports.
The Hessen frigate repelled an attack by Iran-backed Huthi militants in Yemen and engaged two enemy targets in the air, sources told the DPA news agency.
Last Friday, the German Bundestag approved participation in the EU effort, which goes by the name “Aspides”. The frigate had already left to participate immediately after the decision.
