France and Germany will be the first two countries to host Britain’s King Charles III on an official state visit, Buckingham Palace announced.
The king and his wife, Queen consort Camilla, will go to Paris on March 26 and will meet President Emmanuel Macron there. After a visit to Bordeaux, the royal couple will then go to Berlin for a meeting with German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier.
“The visits will celebrate the UK’s close ties with France and Germany and emphasize our shared history, culture and values. They also provide an opportunity to look ahead and show the many ways our countries work together,” writes Buckingham Palace in a statement.
The trip will also be the first state visit by a British monarch since 2015, when Queen Elizabeth made her last official trip abroad. Even then, the trip went to Germany, and the queen met, among others, then-president Joachim Gauck.
