Georgia’s ruling party replaces the president

The National Assembly of Georgia has elected Mikheil Kavelashvili as the new president of the country.

Former soccer player Kavelashvili is loyal to the ruling Georgian Dream party, unlike President Salomé Zourabichvili, who, like opposition forces, rejects attempts to replace her.

In a vote boycotted by the opposition, Mikheil Kavelashvili was elected with 224 votes as the country’s next president for a five-year term.
