Georgia’s new president took office, the predecessor still claims to be the country’s legitimate leader | News in brief

In Georgia, the country’s new president Mikheil Kavelashvili has taken the oath of office. His predecessor Salome Zurabishvili has agreed to leave the presidential palace, but still claims to be the country’s legitimate leader.

Thousands of people have protested Kavelashvili’s ascension to the presidency in the country’s capital, Tbilisi.

Kavelashvili was elected president in the middle of this month. He was the candidate of the pro-Russian ruling party Georgian Dream.

The opposition considers the presidential elections to be fraudulent, as well as the parliamentary elections that preceded them in October.
