The ex-president has been hospitalized since late last year after going on hunger strike – an act the country’s Justice Minister Rati Bregadze called “self-harming behavior” with “the simple goal of achieving freedom”.

On Thursday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi accused Georgia of “slowly killing” Saakashvili, who was Georgia’s president from 2004 to 2013.

He was stripped of his Georgian passport after becoming a Ukrainian citizen in 2018 during his time in exile. The Council of Europe has previously demanded that he be released, and the human rights organization Amnesty International classifies his case as “obvious political revenge”.
