George RR Martin explains why Game of Thrones and Star Wars basically tell the same story

Game of Thrones and Star Wars are two fictional universes that have produced many books, films and series, but at first glance they seem quite different. However, according to George RR Martin, there is one crucial similarity.

Game of Thrones and Star Wars are two of the biggest brands in the world. They each have a huge fan base. Some like to indulge in the intrigues of George RR Martin’s dark fantasy world, while others call George Lucas’s space opera their favorite universe.

Star Wars is aimed at science fiction fans, while Game of Thrones is aimed at fantasy fans. But fans of Martin will have to be patient when waiting for new volumes.

Despite all the differences between these two genres, George RR Martin sees one great thing in common.

The interior of the figures is the focus

What does George RR Martin say? The writer was a guest on the official Game of Thrones podcast and talked about his work. He talked about an acceptance speech by the author William Faulkner, who he admired.

He said: “The only thing worth writing about is the human heart in conflict with itself.”

Martin took this to heart and incorporated it into his own work. He says that the apparent opposites between science fiction and fantasy actually don’t exist. It doesn’t matter at all whether the characters in these stories use lightsabers or broadswords. It doesn’t matter whether there are aliens or dragons to fight.

Because at its core, Game of Thrones, like a science fiction story like Star Wars, is about the characters and their emotional journey. The protagonists are in conflict with themselves and have to resolve it in order to be victorious in the end.

According to Martin, it is very important that the readers or the audience themselves become emotionally involved with the characters. What happens around them is irrelevant. In the case of Game of Thrones and Star Wars, this claim seems to have been fulfilled. After all, fans of both brands have been excited about the characters for decades – even if the finale of the GoT series itself did not satisfy the creator.

The actual name of “Game of Thrones” is “A Song of Ice and Fire”: Game of Thrones is just the name of the 1st novel. But because the extremely successful television series on HBO was also called that, the name has now established itself as a more common description for the series.

So, beneath the surface, stories of different genres can be very similar. At least that’s George RR Martin’s opinion. What do you think about it?
