Generative AI the expensive gamble of Gafam

Four billion dollars. This is the amount that Amazon should invest in the artificial intelligence start-up Anthropic, unknown to the general public, all for a stake which will remain a minority.

And the e-commerce giant is no exception: since the start of the year, the craze for conversational robots like ChatGPT has exploded the amount of fundraising in generative AI, a type of artificial intelligence capable of generating text and images on command. In just four years, investments in this sector have increased more than tenfold in volume, reaching $20 billion.

To understand this craze for artificial intelligence, we must understand the challenges that this revolution brings for Big Tech: if they were to miss this technological shift, Gafam fears abandoning their ultra-monopolistic position to become Alcatel and Xerox of tomorrow.

They therefore all put their hands in their pockets as evidenced by the ten billion dollars invested by Microsoft last January in OpenAI, the company publishing ChatGPT, the deployment of Bard on Google’s side and even Llama 2 at Meta.
