Young people want to work less: “Not a lazy generation”
1:03
Earn Money is next to the top of the list of priorities among young people, shows a new report from The youth barometer. Only their friends are more important.
Generation Z is the first generation that has grown up with social media. They have been fed since childhood by influencers, youtubers and ticto profiles.
Seeing successful people on the other side of the screen every day has affected them, says Katarina Graffman, doctor of cultural anthropology.

She takes Bianca Ingrosso as an example.
– She has not spent four to five years on university studies with student loans. She is good looking, she is very visible and she makes a lot of money.
She continues:
– It is clear that it affects. Why should I read five years at the university and then truck for ten years at a company before I start making fun stuff and earn more?
“Feeling for all the time”
But it’s not just money that is high on the wish list.
Young people prioritize freedom and they talk about “work life balance”.
– It has always been important with that kind of balance, but young people have become more conscious and better at making demands.
It is about being able to feel from an early age all the time and that children early think about issues such as stress, says Katarina Graffman.
-I think that is the reason why we talk about “work life balance”, that we have a culture of feeling about these things.

Don’t like authorities
With a new generation also comes other requirements and expectations of the employer.
– It’s really no stranger than others want: good salary, a good manager and the opportunity for development, says Katarina Graffman.
At the same time, she believes that employers will have to adapt and create an understanding of the new generation.
– Many people think that young people are so heavenly digital and cool and can work from anywhere. Although they really need support and form into a workplace culture.
One aspect of it is about generation Z rather coaching than being overpowered.
– Young people want a coach to get skills and support.
She continues:
– It can be a manager, mentor or advisor. It is about an opportunity to develop so that you can quickly make a better career.
Katarina Graffman believes that there is a difference in acceptance between older and younger generations.
– Older generation accepted more authoritarian managers, it is less appreciated today.
