Gaza: the Palestinian people, the other victim of Hamas

Gaza the Palestinian people the other victim of Hamas

A few scenes of jubilation should not hide the sad reality: the Palestinian people and their cause will be the other major victims of the vile attack launched by Hamas against Israel. Already, the approximately 2.3 million inhabitants of the Gaza Strip, under blockade since 2007 and in the grip of great poverty, have been deprived of water, electricity and gas since the “complete siege” decreed by the Jewish state in retaliation. In addition to airstrikes, the likely intervention by the IDF to hunt down Hamas in one of the densest territories in the world risks causing numerous deaths and destruction.

The terrorist organization, driven above all by its own political interests – establishing itself as the leader of the Palestinian cause by undermining the credibility of the Palestinian Authority -, demonstrated an astonishing cynicism, knowing full well that Israel would retaliate very strongly to his aggression. Obsessed with destroying Israel, she has no solutions to offer. In reality, the Palestinians will also pay the price of this drama on the political level.

“Hamas has gone from house to house killing civilians: the Palestinians will be reduced to their image of terrorists of the 1970s and lose diplomatic support, even from some Arab countries,” warns Ghaith Al-Omari, former Palestinian negotiator, now a researcher at the Washington Institute.

“Today, this population, who felt humiliated, even betrayed, has the impression of being at the center of events again. But I fear that, in six months, the situation will return to what it was before the war”, continues this expert. The cycle of violence would then resume. Unending.
