Sixth-seeded home favorite Coco Gauff is through to the quarter-finals of the US Open after defeating Caroline Wozniacki 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 at Arthur Ashe Stadium on Sunday.
19-year-old Gauff will now next face reigning US Open champion Iga Swiatek or Latvian Jelena Ostapenko in Tuesday’s quarter-finals.
After the win, Coco Gauff said she went into the match knowing she had to play aggressively to beat Wozniacki.
— She’s a player you have to be mentally tough against for every point, Gauff said.
The loss to Gauff marked the end of Caroline Wozniacki’s somewhat fairytale comeback at the US Open in her first grand slam tournament in three and a half years.
Wozniacki, 33, retired from tennis after the 2020 Australian Open to start a family. This year’s US Open was the third tournament the mother of two has played since returning to the tour in Montreal last month.
Gauff, who was just a year old when Wozniacki debuted on the WTA Tour in 2005, praised the Dane’s effort in the match between them.
— Carolin is back, it’s like she’s never been gone. The level she played at today was amazing and she has been an inspiration to me growing up, said Coco Gauff.
