Earlier on Monday, there were reports that a passenger plane that was about to land at the airport had been hit by gunfire.
The plane, which came from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, was unable to land and had to fly to the neighboring Dominican Republic where it could land safely.
One member of the crew is reported to have received minor injuries.
The gang allegedly tried to block the road from the capital to the airport. Also inside Port-au-Prince heavy shooting broke out between gangs and police. In the parts of the city that were at least previously more affluent, several houses were set on fire.
Haiti, one of the world’s poorest countries, has been plunged into chaos and anarchy since criminal gangs took over the capital, Port-au-Prince. As a result, the security and healthcare system in the country has largely collapsed.
