gamescom 2023: The Indie Arena is mainly worthwhile because of a survival MMO on Steam

The survival MMO Coreborn was released in Early Access on Steam a few weeks ago and can be played at gamescom 2023. So you can test the game before you invest 24.99 euros. With Coreborn, the Indie Arena Booth has at least one title in 2023 that you should definitely check out.

What is Coreborn? Coreborn is a survival MMO with classic elements from the genre. These include building, crafting and action-based combat. Using resources that we collect in the world, we can craft buildings, weapons, equipment, and food.

The special thing about the game is that we have to protect our built city, which we can expand over time, from monster waves. We can take on the defense alone, alternatively we can hire friends or strangers in the game’s hub.

The game has received attention in the past mainly because ex-RBTV employee Hauke Gerdes is involved as creative director. The title is based on the world of “Ultracore” that he designed.

The world was part of a pen and paper format at Rocket Beans and is based on the open source How to be a Hero ruleset.

In an interview, MeinMMO Hauke was able to personally ask a few questions about Coreborn:

Why is it worth visiting gamescom? At gamescom you can try out games for free and test whether a game could be something for you. If you don’t like the game when you play it, you don’t even have to pay the 24.99 euros for it.

The big advantage of Coreborn is also that it is not found in the main halls. This is where the biggest crowds come in, as these are the halls where the AAA games are presented. But that goes hand in hand with long waiting times: six hours waiting time for a game is not even the maximum.

This year, for example, we can imagine long queues at the following exhibitors, which our colleagues from GameStar have officially confirmed:

  • Starfield (Microsoft/Xbox/Bethesda)
  • Super Mario Bros. Wonder (Nintendo)
  • Assassin’s Creed Mirage (Ubisoft)
  • The Indie Arena, on the other hand, is a smaller area where many games meet. The stands are mostly crowded together and therefore do not offer the possibility that long queues can form.

So there’s a good chance you won’t have to wait too long to test Coreborn.

In addition, the developers of a game are usually represented in the Indie Arena Booth. This allows you to share your questions and comments directly with the team responsible for developing the game.

The team can take your feedback directly and usually implement it better than the AAA titles in the main halls. There are usually only hostesses who have nothing to do with the actual development.

I’ve even noticed that myself: when I had a question about AAA titles, it often couldn’t be answered. It’s different in the indie space: last year, for example, I was able to speak directly to the developer of the acclaimed indie RPG Chained Echoes.

In the indie area, we see the feedback from the developers and those responsible directly when we have some praise or criticism for a game. Along with the shorter waiting times than in the main halls, a visit to the booth is highly recommended.

So if you decide to attend gamescom this year, you should definitely pay a visit to Coreborn. It’s the only MMO that can be found in the Indie Arena.
