Gamescom 2022 started yesterday in Cologne and more than 35 games were newly introduced or they received new trailers. We look at MeinMMO to see who won the unofficial “battle for the trailer” and which game already looks hopeless. MeinMMO author Schuhmann describes his impression of the gamescom Opening Night Live.
Which games were featured? Altogether more than 36 trailers were shown in 2 hours last night, of which only one game, Dead Island 2, had two trailers of its own.
We have summarized the trailers for you in the live ticker.
Harry Potter has the biggest hype before the start of gamescom
Which game had the greatest anticipation ahead of time? If you asked around on social media before gamescom, most Twitter users were hot for “Hogwarts Legacy”, the game from the “Harry Potter” universe. For many Potter fans, this is obviously the game they’ve been waiting for – and Harry Potter is one of the biggest pop culture brands in the world, on par with Star Wars or Lord of the Rings.
A controversy about author JK Rowling’s alleged transphobia cannot dampen the anticipation.
3 games get a lot of applause in the hall
Which game then had the biggest reaction indoors? For the first time in 3 years, gamescom in Cologne had a live audience that was able to react to the trailers. The last major trade fairs were purely virtual.
According to MeinMMO editor-in-chief Leya Jankowski, the biggest reaction in the hall was Dune: Awakening, a new survival MMO from Funcom, which had already developed Conan Exiles. Leya wrote to us that she was close to fainting after the announcement.
There were similarly positive reactions to Hogwarts Legacy, it was enough just to mention the title and the atmosphere in the audience was good.
The rather gory Callisto Protocol was also convincing in the hall.
The laughs on their side had games like Return to Monkey Island or the Goat Simulator 3.
This trailer got the Hall excited: Dune: Awakening
PS5 controller and Dune are the big winners of gamescom 2022
How’s the views? About 20 hours later, the trailer views for these 3 crowd favorites look like this:
The trailer for the new PlayStation controller ran out of competition:
So the PS5 controller is sure to be one of the big winners.
When it comes to views, we refer to the official trailers – game trailers often have many views via other channels as well.
Who won the games? Judging by the video views on the trailer and the upvotes on reddit, “Dune: Awakening” has probably won the gamescom kick-off.
In the gaming-savvy audience, the SF brand “Dune” is even a bit hotter than in the Twitter public, where Harry Potter fans dominate.
Classic rock or metal make any trailer better
Who was my favorite? I, Schuhmann from MeinMMO, especially liked the trailer
It’s not because I liked the game that much or because I’m a Dark Souls fan, it’s just because I’m totally conditioned:
Because the game with the somewhat silly name, like every “Dark Fantasy” game, relies on a rock classic, Danzig – Mother.
The combination of action trailer and classic rock has convinced me since the first Destiny trailer, where Bungie showed how much they like Led Zeppelin.
For me one of the best hype trailers ever:
Unusual game walks on dangerous paths
So who’s the nominee for The Game is Dying? It’s a bit sad because it was met with applause in the hall too and it wants to appeal to core gamers and enthusiasts, but I have to admit that “Moonbreaker” has a bad chance of surviving in the long term.
The game wants to be a “turn-based strategist game” and emulate the tabletop experience of miniature games like Warhammer, you should even be able to paint miniatures.
The game itself wants to be like a mixture of “Xcom and Hearthstone”, i.e. mix two successful games.
It seems to me more like a mix of “Atlas Reactor” and “Battleborn”, two bad flops. I even liked Battleborn, but that just didn’t work with its crazy visuals, where every character was kind of weird.
And Atlas Reactor was such a bad flop that it didn’t just die once, but 3 times.
Some people are already appearing in the comments on YouTube saying that instead of playing something like that, they would simply prefer to use the original.
The development team behind the game is known for blatant genre changes and surprises. With “Subanutica” they had a pacifist survival hit, but it’s already doubtful that Moonbreaker will be a success – even if I would really give the game a “despite all odds” success.
But I have my doubts about the game, also because “Mister Totenkuss personally” immediately took Moonbreaker to his heart: The former MeinMMO editor Jürgen Horn said he liked the game, so he was already sure that it would die soon. Jürgen has a little curse going on:
