Gamers like to passionately discuss their hobby, often even before a game is released. It can happen that opinions about how good or bad something will be – and whether a new idea should even be successful – become established before it is released. Recently there was such a discussion about Dragon Age: The Veilguard, but that is by no means the only game.
In recent years, various studios have tried to try something new and move away from the formula and type of game that made the studio great:
Ideas like this, moving away from what made the studios great and trying something completely different, don’t always go over well with gamers. Fans of the old games tend to look dissatisfied at the new releases. In some cases, the demise of the new games is even desired. This has happened several times in the past.
Dragon Age: The Veilguard
The latest example is the new Dragon Age. After 10 years of waiting, fans finally got a new part of the series. There were two big discussions here before the release:
Until shortly before its release, the squabbles surrounding the game continued to inflame. The fronts have hardened. Some gamers wished that such a “woke” game would not be successful.
This is how The Veilguard is doing now: The new Dragon Age launched with strong reviews on Steam and has attracted over 80,000 players on the platform alone. There are also PS5 and Xbox.
There are certainly games that have started stronger, especially in the AAA sector. However, The Veilguard cannot be described as an absolute flop.
However, the discussion about the game continues: There are heated arguments in the reviews.
Fallout 76
The newest Fallout to date is actually what fans of the series have wanted for ages: a real Fallout with integrated multiplayer. Fallout 4 only managed something like this with mods.
Fallout 76 nevertheless failed to be announced by a large part of the community because it is not only “always online” but was also announced as a survival game.
The biggest point of criticism was that Fallout 76 had to be completely without NPCs and without a solo mode – exactly the things that were so important to the story in earlier parts of Fall. A decision that fans couldn’t understand.
Here’s how Fallout 76 is doing today: After a disastrous start, Fallout 76 has worked its way up to a stable position in recent years. The ratings have increased significantly and on Steam alone the game has an average of between 7,000 and 8,000 players (via steamcharts).
Bethesda also constantly delivers new updates and expansions with content. The missing NPCs have been in the game for years, the story continues and even includes popular factions like the Brotherhood of Steel. The latest update delivers an endgame dungeon with the “biggest challenge” for players yet.
Diablo Immortal
Hardly any game received as much hate when it was announced as Diablo Immortal. When all fans of the series were expecting Diablo 4, Blizzard announced a mobile spin-off instead at BlizzCon 2018.
After the somewhat clumsy answer: “Don’t you have any smartphones?” from chief developer Wyatt Cheng, gamers didn’t give Diablo Immortal a good look until before the release. The biggest meme about the game: “Is this a belated April Fool’s joke?”
This is what Diablo Immortal is doing today: Despite major criticism of the monetization, Diablo Immortal is a complete success. The game has a number of Pay2Win mechanics, but it has still brought in an enormous amount of money – a good portion of it from German players.
In general, the game is pretty well received by its fans. Aside from the greedy shop, Immortal is a solid Diablo and is free for everyone who just wants to play it. Diablo Immortal has now experienced 32 seasons.
Some other games didn’t fare as well as the three on this list. The Shooter Concord, for example, was also criticized even before it was released. However, Concord was discontinued shortly after its release. And that had even harsher consequences: Sony handed out the maximum penalty and closed the studio that developed one of the biggest flops for the PS5
