Gamer orders upgrade for his gaming PC on Amazon, receives significantly weaker product

A gamer ordered a new SSD for his gaming PC. But the product he finally receives is weaker than expected.

Amazon has long been offering a service called Renewed: Under this label, Amazon sells returned products that are checked again and then resold at a lower price. In some cases you can even get a bargain.

But one user wasn’t very lucky. Because he ordered an SSD for his gaming PC on Amazon and received the wrong product. He reports this on Reddit.

User receives wrong SSD in the correct packaging

What did the user order? The gamer ordered a Samsung SSD 980 Pro with 2 TB of storage on Amazon. To date, we consider the 980 Pro to be one of the best SSDs you can buy for your PS5 or PC.

But when the user takes the product out of the box, he discovers that he has received the wrong SSD. Because the box doesn’t contain the 980 Pro, but the slower 970 EVO Plus. On top of that, the model he received only offers 1 TB instead of 2 TB. The price difference between the models is always around 40 euros if you look at the street prices.

Does something like this happen more often? Yes, cases like this happen all the time. This is how players order graphics cards on Amazon and get worthless products instead. It is not known how often this happens because there are no reliable figures.

Why do people get worse products? Behind such false products there are often brazen people who profit from returns:

  • A gamer orders two SSDs on Amazon.
  • They then install the better model in their computer and put the worse model in the box of the high-end model.
  • Finally, they demand their money back from Amazon and send in the wrong model in high-end packaging.
  • Some users also report that Amazon does not have employees experienced enough to differentiate between computer hardware. To them, all graphics cards look the same and an SSD looks like any other.

Take a good look at your orders when you unpack products

How can I prevent such problems? If you order “renewed” products via the Marketplace or from Amazon, you can hardly prevent such incorrect items at first. Because Amazon is primarily responsible for what you ultimately get out of the package.

But you should definitely check what you get out of the package. Some users would probably have installed the 1 TB SSD in their computer without realizing that they had actually ordered a different one. If you notice that you have received the wrong product, you should definitely complain. Some users even recommend making a video when unpacking very expensive hardware. Then you can immediately see that the fault is not yours.

By the way, there are always stories that people don’t have much luck when returning counterfeit products. A father tried to refund a fake product on Amazon, but Amazon refused:
