“Gamer grandmother” takes Chile by storm: “I didn’t know what a computer mouse was”

María Elena, or “Mami Nena”, as she is better known as, is 81 years old and lives in the countryside outside Santiago in a small orange house. Here she loves spending time with her grandchildren. But after her husband died, she has also started hanging out with them online in the popular shooting game “Free Fire”.

It was her grandson Héctor who made her immerse herself in “Free Fire”. In the game, she has made a name for herself as a tough rival who chases her opponents and cunningly hides behind trees and houses.

– I didn’t want to hurt anyone, but I liked following Héctor in the game, she says.

Won game award in Chile

Three years after she began her digital adventure with her grandchildren, she has become so successful, and so popular, that she has over four million followers on tiktok and 700,000 subscribers on youtube who follow her violent online adventures.

Thanks to her success, “Free Fire” has now named her one of the most influential people in video games and paid for a trip to Mexico City in 2022 to celebrate the brand’s anniversary.

– All the players asked me to sign autographs, it was wonderful. The day I leave, I will leave with this memory, says “Nena”.
