The Goose Goose Duck game is fast becoming a phenomenon on Steam. After gaining momentum in recent months, it has now reached a new milestone.
What kind of game is this? Goose Goose Duck was released in 2021 and is clearly reminiscent of the surprise hit Among Us, but it’s free. In the middle of space you’re hanging around on a space station and you want to complete your mission successfully – except that in this case you’re a crew of geese.
However, there are also ducks hiding in your ranks, which you have to unmask before your geese get their collars on. This requires good mutual agreement.
The game offers several maps that also offer environments away from a spaceship – such as the “Ancient Sands” map in the desert. There are also features like an optional proximity chat, different game modes and classes of birds.
This is what it looks like:
Numbers of Goose Goose Duck shoot up
That’s what the numbers say: Although Goose Goose Duck was released in 2021, it has been attracting real attention since December 2022. The number of players suddenly increased rapidly, and the ratings are also positive.
November was already a leap compared to October (1,613 on average / 6,069 in peak) with around 52,000 players on average and around 52,000 at peak, after which it continued to rise.
In December, the game averaged 61,446 players and peaked at 414,978 players (via SteamCharts.com). It also landed in Steam’s 2022 “Most Played Games” overview.
On Thursday, January 5th, the game reached its peak so far: 563,293 concurrent players in the peak tried to find out who is goose and who is duck. Currently (January 5, 2023, 7:00 p.m.) Steam Charts counts 343,543 active players in Goose Goose Duck.
This puts it ahead of popular games like the MMORPG Lost Ark, which was just handing out gifts, or the battle royale PUBG: Battlegrounds. Only Dota 2 and CS:GO are ahead of him at the moment.
What’s going on there? The game is going through a similar evolution as Among Us, which was also out long before it became an overnight hit. However, Among Us peaked at 438,524 players – a number that the Goose game has already cracked.
Analyst Daniel Ahmad points to the Asian market:
Korea and China are emerging as key markets for the game, and player growth in China in particular has apparently been immense. The rush of Chinese players caused the server to fail, which is also addressed in developer comments on Steam (via Steam).
They also address the players there in Chinese, apologize and make it clear that growth was expected, but not on such a large scale. Now they are also looking for partners in China.
