Exciting news for all Game of Thrones fans: half a decade after the end, the epic fantasy series could make the jump to the big screen. As the Hollywood Reporter has learned from its sources, Warner Bros. is at least a Game of Thrones film in development.
Based on the report, the project is still in its infancy. Neither the plot nor the characters appearing in the film have been determined yet. Warner has not yet made a decision on the filmmakers either. For now, various ideas will be explored as to what the Game of Thrones film could look like.
Fantasy epic comes to the cinema: The Game of Thrones film marks an exciting change of course
It looks like the direction of the franchise has changed. So far, apart from the books, Game of Thrones has mainly been represented in series form on the US broadcaster HBO and the associated streaming service Max. In addition to the main series, which ran from 2011 to 2019, the prequel House of the Dragon has existed for two years.
In addition, further series spin-offs are planned. The next one starts in 2025 and is titled A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. There are also numerous other projects, both live-action series and animated series. Here you will find a complete overview of the previously announced and rumored spin-offs.
There were plans to bring the fantasy epic to the cinema many years ago. David Benioff and DB Weiss originally wanted Game of Thrones end with a film trilogy. Game of Thrones creator George RR Martin also toyed with the idea of seeing the world of Westeros on the big screen several times.
Back in 2014, he told the Hollywood Reporter:
It all depends on how long the main series runs. Are we running for seven years? Are we running for eight years? Are we running for 10 years? The books are getting bigger and bigger. It might take a feature film to wrap things up, something with a feature budget, say $100 million for two hours. These dragons are getting really big.
It is now clear that this will not happen. The Game of Thrones finale came to HBO with Season 8. It will now be exciting to see what ideas emerge for the first Game of Thrones film. Perhaps this will also give a discarded project a breath of fresh air, such as the sequel with Jon Snow that was announced a long time ago.
However, what sounded like season 9 of the main series at the time remained stuck in development hell. Perhaps the Kit Harington-led sequel would be a better fit for the cinema. We can’t wait to see what plans Warner has for the Game of Thrones film (or possibly even the Game of Thrones films).
When does the Game of Thrones film start in cinemas?
In order to answer this question, the project would first have to be officially announced by Warner Bros. with a theatrical release. Since the Game of Thrones film is only in its very early phase, there could still be several years passuntil the matter becomes concrete. In the meantime, alongside A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, seasons 3 and 4 of House of the Dragon will also be released on HBO.
