The Game Awards are once again back for a colorful 2022 edition. An evening presented by Geoff Keighley rich in trailers, announcements and above all rewards.

As the industry gradually recovers from the effects of the coronavirus pandemic, some titles that have been expected for several years have upset many players, while some very nice surprises have stormed game consoles and PCs. Like every year, the Game Awards close the season by rewarding players in the video game industry during an evening presented by the essential Geoff Keighley. A broadcast that will take place late at night and which will also be the time to discover some new projects for the coming year. Broadcast time, expected games, nominees… We take stock just below.
The Game Awards ceremony will be held for us French people on the night of Thursday 8 to Friday 9 December at 1:30 a.m.. A fairly late broadcast since the conference will be held at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, which implies a fairly substantial time difference. The ceremony is expected to last a little over two hours, as Geoff Keighley said the format of the event should be much shorter than in previous years. The pre-show is a moment not to be underestimated during the Game Awards, a presentation of about thirty minutes dedicated to the future of the industry, and especially to the next expected releases. Among the completely unconfirmed rumors about the contents of tonight’s The Game Awards pre-show, there has been mention of upcoming Elden Ring DLC, and Horizon Forbidden West. The two open-worlds will soon celebrate one year of their respective releases and may well be moving forward on new content. Tekken and Street Fighter could also make an appearance in the evening. Destiny 2 will also most likely be on the program with the arrival of its new Lightfall expansion in January. A new DLC which results in the arrival of four new seasons of content and which will close the long and prolific existence of Bungie’s shooter.
Among the contenders for the most coveted title of the prestigious Game Awards 2022 ceremony, we find various big hits of the year 2022. Among them, Elden Ring, From Software’s total masterpiece that has immersed millions of players in its mysterious and terrifying open-world. A timeless adventure that showed the full potential of From Software games both gameplay-wise and technically, and a huge favorite of the evening. At his side, his most serious competitor is none other than God of War: Ragnarok. The continuation of the adventures of Kratos and Atreus in the Seven Kingdoms has been praised by the press for what it is: a mythological epic as beautiful as it is well scripted, and an essential asset to Playstation consoles. Then another Playstation exclusive joins the ranks of nominees, Horizon Forbidden Westone of the most beautiful games ever made and a true technical showcase of the PS5.
Cocorico, the fourth GOTY nominee is French, and it isA Plague Tale: Requiem. Asobo Studios’ sequel to the medieval tale continues the story of Amicia and Hugo deep in fifteenth-century France. A game as beautiful as it is overwhelming, but which will struggle to hold up against the behemoths mentioned just above. The fifth nominee is also from a French studio, is none other than the original and poetic adventure stray, which puts you in the shoes of a cat, lost in a vibrant and alive post-collapse world. Finally, the last nominee also comes from Japan and is none other than the excellent turn-based JRPG Xenoblade Chronicles 3the latest in a long line of hits that have become classics of the genre.
Elden Ring and God of War: Ragnarök at the top?
With no less than seven nominations, Elden Ring is one of the most hailed titles of this 2022 edition of The Game Awards. The new release from From Software, the Japanese studios made famous by the Dark Souls and Bloodborne franchise, is well placed to claim the title of Game of the Year. It will only be necessary to counter the growing influence of an even more recent novelty, God of War: Ragnarök, nominated in nearly nine categories. The fight is likely to be tight between these two releases expected for a few years which culminate well above their competition in terms of ratings with 96/100 for Elden Ring and 94/100 for God of War, unheard of.
French games in the spotlight
These Game Awards 2022 are also a great opportunity to reward French gaming. With two games nominated for Best Game of the Year, our studios have much to be proud of, especially when competing against competitors the size of From Software or Sony Santa Monica. Their creations, Stray and A Plague Tale: Requiem also have the merit of being extremely original projects, sometimes profoundly modifying our way of playing. A Plague Tale Requiem’s historical accuracy makes it almost a masterclass in 15th century nature in Europe, while Stray’s originality and subtle commentary on the future of our species clearly refreshed our long, hot days. from last August. And while both of these Davids may struggle against the Goliaths of the GOTY category, they have plenty to bring home a few cuts with their respective 5 and 7 nominations.
