Gallo-Roman cult objects have been discovered in Brittany

A Gallo Roman statuette discovered in Brittany

In the first century BC, a sanctuary was erected near reindeer. The latter was probably used for five centuries and makes it possible to understand what were the religious practices and beliefs, in particular of the celts of the region, named Riedones. The study of this type of complex is particularly interesting from the point of view ofemergence of Gallo-Roman culture. A Inrap publication reports that the sanctuary houses two temples as well as two small “chapels” located in a space probably used to accommodate ceremonial participants.

A sanctuary for several gods?

Archaeologists have discovered a bronze statuette of the god Mars, which suggests that one of the two temples was probably dedicated to the worship of this deity. It is also important to note that if the god Mars is associated with war in traditionally Roman regions, in Roman Gaul he is a benevolent and protective god.

The statement also mentions the discovery of another sacred object which is in the form of a bronze cup with two handles. The latter are decorated with sculptures representing the lightning and an eagle. However, these last attributes are those of Jupiter, which suggests that several deities were celebrated in this sanctuary. gallo-roman.
