The Swedish top diplomat Hans Grundberg says that diplomatic efforts to reach a ceasefire agreement in Yemen are intensifying. UN envoy Grundberg claimed on Monday that “there are opportunities that must not be lost”.

At the same time, he warned that “the slightest mistake could set off a new wave of violence that will be difficult to stop” despite the parties currently showing “military restraint”.

The civil war, which is also a major regional war by proxy in the country in the southern part of the Arabian Peninsula, has been going on for eight years. It is one of the conflicts that has hit the civilian population hardest in modern times.

A previous ceasefire between government forces and Huthir rebels expired on October 2 last year, and “the military situation has since remained stable” without major escalations of hostilities, Grundberg said in connection with his report to the UN Security Council in New York .
