Government negotiations are dragging on, but Denmark at least looks set to get a new speaker this week.
Liberala Venstre has nominated the former Minister of Defense Søren Gade, and both the Social Democrats and the Socialist People’s Party as well as the Moderates and New Citizens have supported the election. This means that a majority in the new parliament will vote for Gade, who until the election sat in the European Parliament.
– There are certain things in life that you cannot say no to. This is one of them, he says.
In the election on November 1, the red bloc secured its own majority in the Norwegian Parliament, but the goal for S is to form a broad government across the bloc border.
Venstre, the largest opposition party, has, however, maintained a wait-and-see attitude and political analysts see, according to DR, the election of Gade as a showdown between Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Venstre party leader Jakob Ellemann-Jensen.
