The funeral for Queen Elizabeth II on Monday has caused the Municipality of Chatham-Kent to cancel some scheduled events.
Monday’s 6 pm planning meeting has been canceled in respect of the passing of Queen Elizabeth II and her funeral, stated a municipal media release.
The planning meeting has been rescheduled for Oct. 17.
A planned event to have reporters take part in a virtual media scrum with Chatham-Kent’s new medical officer of health Dr. Mario Kangeswaren has been moved from Monday at noon to Wednesday at noon due to the holiday Monday, stated the municipality.
The queen’s death last Thursday at age 96 prompted Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to declare Monday a National Day of Mourning in Canada to mark her passing.
It has been designated a national holiday for the public service of Canada with other employers across the country invited to recognize the National Day of Mourning.
However, Ontario Premier Doug Ford has opted to have Monday be a Day of Mourning for Queen Elizabeth II in lieu of a provincial holiday. Ontarians are encouraged to observe a moment of silence at 1 pm on Monday.
