There is now a full-blown famine in northern Gaza, according to Cindy McCain, head of the UN’s World Food Program (WFP).

In a clip, released in advance, from an interview with the American television channel NBC that will be broadcast on Sunday, McCain says that the situation is terrible.

– There is famine, fully developed famine in the north and it is moving further south.

McCain is so far the most prominent international actor to describe the situation in those terms. She says a truce between Israel and Hamas is absolutely critical to getting more supplies in and easing the humanitarian disaster in the Gaza Strip, where an estimated 2.3 million Palestinians live.
