FS Group launch of a new Italferr digital project for

(Finance) – Mapping and analyzing the Basilica of Saint Peter to make it the subject of constant future monitoring. This is the goal of project that makes use of Italferr’s digital know-how, there engineering company of the Infrastructure Pole of the Italian State Railways Group, which allowed the creation of a digital twin of the Vatican Basilica. The study, conducted in collaboration with the Fabbrica di San Pietro, – as reported by FS News, the information portal of the FS Group – took its very first steps in July and August 2022, during the hours it is closed to the public, with the first necessary findings to collect over 3.1 terabytes of data.

The survey phase required 2 months, between inside and outside, with drone and balloon, 15,000 photos for 630 Giga Pixels acquired, 2 weeks of post-processing of the point clouds with several PCs in parallel, and a further 2 months of activity for the development of BIM information model and the Digital Twin. These are the numbers of the launch of a complex project in which high technology and digitization find a synthesis with the art, faith and culture guarded by the Vatican Basilica.

To date, the entire amount of data is already in possession of St. Peter’s factory. The data coming from the sensors defined in the monitoring project will flow into the Digital Twin of the Basilica. The elaborations will be made available to the Fabbrica di San Pietro for future maintenance activities at the service of the Basilica. By means of specific calculation algorithms, it will thus be possible to investigate the response capacity of the work to static and dynamic stresses, have full knowledge of the state of health of the structures and proceed with the design of a permanent structural monitoring system. The possible future applications are many.

In support of the project, Italferr has partnerships with highly qualified companies such as Italdron Air Service Srlsupported by CAD Connect, for field survey activities, e Sacertis Engineering Ltd for the design of the monitoring system. The project will be illustrated to the public as soon as the first phase of processing the collected data is completed.
