The protesters are afraid that the use of pesticides can ultimately lead to diseases such as Parkinson’s. And that is a fear that toxicologists, including those of Utrecht University, are right. Extinction Rebellion therefore wants pesticides to be stopped by the CBGT as a precaution. “That is immediately campaigning,” says Frijlink, who does not necessarily point to the fruit growers. “It’s really about the system of admission, regulations, the lobby and politics.”
