Frozen food cools animals in hot Greece

Ice blocks with meat, bones and fruit will help animals cope with the heat in Greece – where temperatures in some places have reached 40 degrees. They are served at the Attica zoo outside Athens, where curator Antonis Balas, among other things, fed lemurs with cooling food.

– In general, heat affects animals in the same way as humans, he says.

– The frozen treats are a complement to their meals, they lick the ice and breathe in the cold air.

The latest heatwave is the fourth in a month in Greece, where high temperatures and fires have affected wildlife. Around 2,500 animals and beehives are estimated to have been lost in the fires on the island of Rhodes, where thousands of tourists were evacuated from the flames.

A deer and several turtles that were injured in the fires on Rhodes are now being cared for at the Attica Zoo.

The temperature is expected to reach 42 degrees in parts of Greece on Saturday.
