Van de Zandschulp, who also reached the semi-finals in Saint Petersburg in October, started poorly against Ruud but nevertheless won the first set 7-5. In the second set, he gave the Norwegian only one game: 6-1. Ruud already won the Buenos Aires tournament this year and he was a finalist at the Miami masters tournament.
