From “Snake” to millions of bets – How mobile became the world’s largest gaming platform

From “Snake” to the biggest in the industry – See the journey of mobile games in the clip above.

In 2023, the mobile games market is expected to have a turnover equivalent to SEK 930.8 billion, according to Statista, which in turn is expected to correspond to 56 percent of the entire gaming industry.

But the report “Good games don’t die”, which is based on interviews with 500 game developers in Great Britain and the United States, shows that it is difficult to make games live for a long time.

The majority fail

It shows that 83 percent of all titles launched fail within three years – meaning they are either pulled from sales or seen as financial disappointments by their developer.

According to Per Strömbäck, spokesperson for the Computer Games Industry, it is a deliberate tactic from the developers to try their hand.

– You make cheap games and the ones that work you work on and they can become world hits, he says.

It is also the reason why many games do not stick, says Strömbäck. He gives the games “Candy crush” and “Angry birds” as examples where the developer made many games to finally get a hit.

But that sounds like a grim number?

– It depends on whether you expect it to be an immediate success or whether you know that you have to try your hand at it.

But how did we end up here? And why does Per Strömbäck not think the development is a bad thing, get the answers in the clip below:
